FIRE SAFETY
FIRE HAZARD & SAFETY LEVELS
Signs with the Fire Hazard Level are located In East Sooke on Gillespie Road, near Roche Cove Park, on East Sooke Road, near Becher Bay Road, and at the intersection of Gillespie and East Sooke Road.
Please make sure to view these signs when visiting or traveling in our community.
FIRE HAZARD LEVELS
RED (EXTREME)
Extremely dry forest fuels and the fire risk is very serious. New fires will start easily, spread rapidly, and challenge fire suppression efforts. General forest activities will be restricted, including open burning, industrial activities and campfires.
ORANGE (HIGH)
Forest fuels are very dry and the fire risk is serious. New fires may start easily, burn vigorously, and challenge fire suppression efforts. Extreme caution must be used in any forest activities. Open burning and industrial activities may be restricted.
YELLOW (MODERATE)
Forest fuels are drying and there is an increased risk of surface fires starting. Carry out any forest activities with caution.
GREEN (LOW)
Fires may start easily and spread quickly but there will be minimal involvement of deeper fuel layers or larger fuels.
BURNING RESTRICTIONS
*NO BURN BARREL, OR HOUSEHOLD FIRES ARE PERMITTED DURING HIGH & EXTREME LEVELS.
CAMPFIRE RESTRICTIONS
Unless the Fire Hazard Level rating is at EXTREME, campfires will be permitted with the following restrictions: The public is reminded that campfires cannot be larger than a half-meter high by a half-meter wide (18 inches) ground within 1 meter (3ft) must be cleared of all organic matter. Anyone who lights a campfire must have a hand tool (such as a shovel) or at least eight liters of water available nearby to fully extinguish it. Never leave a campfire unattended and make sure the ashes are completely cold to the touch before leaving the area.
